The free public reception, with artists in attendance, is today from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Among the artists: Lorraine Fink, Bob Holland, Louis and Susan Jones and Charles Sibley.

What's preventing you from fully expressing your creativity? A workshop that begins on Saturday at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center could help you get a grip on it.

Leading the workshop will be Tom Wessells, a top furniture artist as well as a psychotherapist in private practice in Newport News. Anyone can participate, although the program is geared to people with creative involvements, such as musicians, writers and visual artists.

On Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Wessells will discuss how personality traits and other issues could inhibit creativity. Ways to overcome those inhibitions will be presented.

The group will meet again on Feb. 18, bringing objects of personal significance to contribute to a communal healing altar. Artist Lynne Sward will direct the creation of the altar that morning.

Workshop participation is not required to offer items to the altar, but the items must be brought to Sward that day. Later that afternoon, at 1 p.m., Darrell Rose will complete the catharsis with a performance of his ``African healing drums.''

A $25 fee is charged for the workshop. Call 596-8175 to register.

The workshop and altar are special projects related to ``Art as Invocation,'' a series of four exhibits with themes related to art and healing.

The show is on view through April 2 at the center, 101 Museum Drive, Newport News. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Free. by CNB
