Dare County spent slightly more than $10,000 to lure the 1996 Babe Ruth Baseball World Series to Northeastern North Carolina.
In figures released last week by the county Finance Department, $7,521 was spent during a visit last month by officials of the Trenton, N.J.-based Babe Ruth league.
About $5,800 of that went for a reception to welcome the Babe Ruth delegation. About 1,000 Dare County residents attended.
An additional $2,628 was spent when a seven-member delegation from the county went to Houma, La., for the 1994 World Series.
The county also spent about $50,000 to improve the Manteo High School baseball field, including a new press box and restroom facilities. The improvements would have been made without the World Series effort, however, county officials said.
The series, set for August 1996, is expected to have a $1.5 million economic impact on the county. by CNB
