A Virginia Beach firefighter was slightly hurt battling a fire that

destroyed a two-story house Monday. The firefighter, assigned to

Company 3 at London Bridge, was treated at Virginia Beach General

Hospital for burns on his ears, fire spokesman Chase Sargent said. A

35-year-old mother and her 2-year-old son escaped the blaze, which

broke out about 10 a.m. in the 2400 block of Bullock Drive after a

smoke detector alerted them. The fire apparently began on the first

floor and spread to the second floor and attic. Damage was estimated

at between $80,000 and $100,000.
