MELTON E. BEANE COMMANDING OFFICER, 4TH POLICE PRECINCT

When Salem High students see police Capt. M.E. Beane in the building it doesn't mean trouble. It might mean he's just stopped by for lunch. Or, is visiting with students or teachers.

Beane, commanding officer of the 4th Precinct in Kempsville, is on a mission to promote good relations between kids and cops in the schools in his precinct. ``We try to stop by on a daily basis,'' he said. ``If they see a police car it doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. But if there is a problem, there can be a quick response.''

Salem students recently showed their appreciation in a big way. They signed a ``thank you for keeping us safe'' banner - a bed sheet - which now hangs in Beane's office.
