It may surprise Margaret Taylor Hooper (``Change columnists,'' letter, Jan. 20), and you, too, that there are a considerable number of people in this community who do, in fact, lament the forced resignation of John Barnes as editorial-page editor. He brought a temporary bit of balance to your editorial pages and an all-too-brief reprieve from the unrelenting left-wing liberal bias usually evident there.
Ms. Hooper can't stand columnists Buchanan, Thomas or Snow. Well, I can't stand Cohen, Goodman, Page, Ivins, Kaul, Rosenthal, Lewis and others of their ilk, and I, too, ``have been reading the paper long enough to be taken seriously.''
However, I respect the fact that not everyone might agree with my views, and I have no strong objection to your publishing their liberal columns as long as you balance them with an equal number of opposing, conservative viewpoints.
