An 8-year-old girl was listed in critical condition Tuesday night after being struck by a car in the Newland area when she got off a school bus, officials said.
The girl, Kellye Okleshen of the 1300 block of Turnpike Road, was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by Nightingale Air Ambulance. She was later transferred to the intensive care unit of Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
John Winslow, 62, of New Jersey, was arrested and charged with failure to stop for a stopped school bus in connection with the incident, North Carolina State Trooper E.D. Goodwin Jr. said. Winslow, who apparently had been in the area to check on some property, was released on $200 cash bond, Goodwin said.
The girl had just gotten off her school bus when she and a dog were struck by the 1985 Lincoln Continental being driven by Winslow, Goodwin said. The dog was killed.
``She was getting off the school bus, and she was almost in the driveway'' of her home when she was hit at about 3:25 p.m., Goodwin said.
The case was still being investigated, Goodwin said.
