A fire swept the George T. McLean Co. building in the 700 block of
Meander Road in Portsmouth about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. The one-story
brick storage building, which housed mostly wood materials, was
gutted, said Capt. William Stublen. Adjoining steel storage sheds
were not damaged. The firefighters could not bring the fire under
control for several hours. The cause of the fire was unknown,
Stublen said, and estimated damage at a half-million dollars.
