A new state organization for flag football has been formed and it will have its headquarters in Portsmouth.
The association is called State of Virginia Flag Football Association.
The association will hold spring and fall state playoffs and will qualify teams for the nationals from the fall tournament.
Officers of the association are Rock Ellis, president; Dennis Felton, treasurer; and Bradley Sunkins, secretary.
Seventeen teams already have indicated they will join the new association, including teams from the Hampton Roads League, the Virginia Beach League, Newport News and the Eastern Shore.
``We're going to open up the fall championship to all teams, not just league winners,'' Ellis said. ``We are planning a major tournament on Thanksgiving weekend and, hopefully, will have the biggest flag football tournament ever held in Virginia.''
Ellis said the two-day tournament will be played at fields across the city, and the championship game will be played in Frank D. Lawrence Stadium.
``We are planning to hold this without charging any admission for spectators,'' he said.
Teams are now being asked to join in the spring session, which will conclude with a tournament at Wilson High School on Sunday, June 4.
The fee for team registration in the State of Virginia Flag Football Association is $15.
The Hampton Roads Flag Football League, which is headed by Ellis, now is signing up teams through Feb. 28. It will open play March 5.
The sponsor fee for the spring and fall seasons is $350. Additional sponsors are being sought. by CNB
