TWO FIRES DAMAGE BUILDINGS

Two fires Tuesday damaged the Red Apple Truck Stop Restaurant on Carolina Road and two residences on Holladay Street.

Firefighters from Suffolk and Whaleyville volunteer fire departments responded to the restaurant fire at 2:55 a.m., quickly bringing it under control, fire officials said.

The restaurant's kitchen, front counter and rear storage area were damaged by the blaze, and the rest of the building had smoke and heat damage.

Suffolk firefighters had just returned from the first call, in the 200 block of Holladay Street, when they were summoned to the fire at the Red Apple. The earlier fire damaged a two-story home and an adjacent duplex, which was unoccupied.

In both fires, the firefighters' efforts were hampered by freezing temperatures and ice. Both fires are under investigation. < by CNB
