FOOD LION REPORTS HIGHER FOURTH-QUARTER EARNINGS

Food Lion Inc. said it earned $50.4 million in the fourth quarter, compared with a $73.4 million loss in the year-earlier period. The recent three-month period ended Dec. 31 includes a charge associated with store closings. The Salisbury, N.C.-based chain of supermarkets said quarterly sales rose 2.6 percent to $2.5 billion from $2.4 billion in the same period a year ago. The company earned $152.9 million in 1994, up from $3.9 million a year earlier. Sales climbed from $7.6 billion to $7.9 billion. by CNB
