Katherine Mapp Calloway, widow of Milton C. Calloway died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1995, in Sentara Hampton General.
A native of Northampton County, Va., Mrs. Calloway had been a Peninsula resident for 51 years. She retired in 1969 from Newport News Public Schools after 25 years of service as an elementary teacher at Newsome Park School. She was a member of the First Church of Newport News (Baptist) and a member of its Beacon Light Club, Lydia Cicle, A.A. Galvin Missionary Society and Golden Age Club.
Mrs. Calloway was a life member of the Lamda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., YMCA, the Newport News Teachers Association, the Newport News Retired Teachers Association, and the Quettes. She was a charter member of the Newport News Chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc.
She attended Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) and received a bachelor of science degree. She did further study at Hampton University. Mrs. Calloway taught school in Norfolk for six years and in Camden County, N.C., for nine years.
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Carol Calloway Jones; a son-in-law, Dr. Clifford B. Jones Jr.; and two grandsons, Dr. Clifford B. Jones and Milton Calloway Jones Jr., all of Elizabeth City, N.C.
A funeral will be conducted at noon today at First Church of Newport News (Baptist) with Dr. J. Fred J. Boddie, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Calloway will lie in state at the church two hours prior to the service. Assemble at 2705 Orcutt Ave. by 11:15 a.m. Saturday.
