NAVY, DEFENSE AGENCIES RECOMMEND CLOSURES

Deputy Defense Secretary John Deutch heard recommendations about potential site closures from the Navy and Defense Department agencies Friday, wrapping up presentations that included an Army suggestion to close or trim 40 sites.

All the military services submitted suggestions to Deutch, who will present them to Defense Secretary William Perry for a final review in the coming weeks, according to several Pentagon officials, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity.

Perry will send his recommendations to the independent Base Closure and Realignment Commission, which will hold hearings before sending a closure list to President Clinton on July 1. Clinton may send the list to Congress for approval, and lawmakers must accept or reject it in its entirety.
