PLAYING LIKE A TEAM HELPS MANTEO REACH ITS 14TH WIN THE REDSKINS' COACH GAVE RIVAL EDENTON-HOLMES CREDIT FOR DELIVERING A STRONG GAME.

The sign of a good team is when it plays like a team. The Manteo boys basketball team has had its individual performances this season, but balance helped the team earn its 14th win this week against Edenton-Holmes.

No less than 10 players put points on the board in coach Bud Hendrix's platoon system as the Redskins pounded the Aces 78-50 in a Northeastern Conference matchup.

Manteo outscored Edenton 25-8 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

The Redskins led by as many as 24 points in the second quarter when Antonio Spencer canned a long 3-pointer for a 39-15 lead. Edenton (5-11, 2-3) rebounded when Bryant White sunk two free throws and Torrance Tripp and Rod Rawls both scored on layups to end the half with Manteo leading 39-21.

The Aces outscored the Redskins 21-14 in the third quarter and when Alex Bond scored on a layup to open the fourth quarter, the Aces trailed by just nine points at 53-44.

Manteo returned to a full court press which was successful in the first half and went on a 15-2 run to seal the win. Darius Collins sunk two free throws and a jumper and Spencer hit a jumper and a slam to pace the Redskins during the run.

Leading 13-7 after one quarter, the Redskins opened the second quarter with a 11-0 run, almost all in transition.

Manteo head coach Bud Hendrix gave Edenton credit for turning up the game a notch in the third quarter.

``Edenton pushed the ball up in the third quarter and made the shots,'' Hendrix said. ``Give them credit; they didn't roll over.''

Robert Woodley, Edenton head coach, said his team ran out of gas in the fourth quarter.

``We made a nice run in the third quarter. We wanted to get back to a closer margin where we thought we could get back in the game. We exerted so much we didn't have any left in the tank,'' Woodley said.

Running out of gas may have been the big difference in the game. While Edenton had to go with its starters for most of the game, Hendrix was able to use substitutes effectively. Players like Ashley O'Neal, Danny Davis, Matt Midgette, Tom Blanchard, and especially Charles Berry, saw quality time.

Spencer led all scorers with 20 points. Collins added 14 points and Jason Summerton scored 12 points for Manteo.

For Edenton, Bond led with 15 points, White scored 14 points, and Tripp added 10 points. by CNB
