The number 96 is unusual in that it is the same upside down and rightside up.
The invertibility of 96 is creating a problem for some motorists this year: In moments of inattention, they are putting on the '96 license-plate sticker upside down. The number, then, is still 96, but the VA on the sticker is upside down, and VA upside down is not VA.
Perry Figueroa, a Department of Motor Vehicles customer-service representative in Richmond, said a motorist probably would not be ticketed for an upside-down 96 sticker.
``That would be up to the discretion of the police officer,'' he said, but it should be clear that the upside-down sticker is for 1996. ``If the police officer is confused,'' Figueroa said, ``perhaps he shouldn't be a police officer.''
If you should put the sticker on upside down and don't like the looks of it, Figueroa said, you can get a new sticker from a DMV office for a dollar.
We recommend extreme caution in putting on license-plate stickers this year.
Not since the '88 stickers has such a problem arisen. by CNB
