MOVING FIRE HEADQUARTERS: FEDERAL AID POSSIBLE

City Manager V. Wayne Orton now has proposed to move the city fire headquarters from Effingham Street to the former Abex site in Southside in an effort to get almost $2 million from the federal government.

Orton recently added $1.8 million to the capital budget to satisfy the requirements for using Superfund money for local projects. The money would come from a settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency and Abex and would move along the cleanup area behind Washington Park.

If moving fire headquarters is the only way we can get the money, then let's do it. However, the move should come within the context of a larger plan for all of the city's fire stations to avoid leaving gaps in coverage in areas of the city. by CNB
