Zelma Rivin has broken a lot of ground in Portsmouth, staying straight on her path of opening communications and opportunities for all citizens.
Returning to Portsmouth after World War II, she immediately became involved in human relations projects. She has continued to push not only for equality of all members of society and has been her own best example.
Rivin was the first woman to head the city's planning commission and was the chairman for several years during which a comprehensive plan was unveiled for the first time.
She has been involved with organizations such as the Women's Political Caucus which honored her last year. One of her proudest activities, she said, was helping establish the HER shelter for battered women.
