Ruby Rose Cooper, of 206 Hardy Avenue, Norfolk departed this life Thursday morning, February 9, 1995. Ruby was a native of New Bern, North Carolina, and daughter of the late Charlie James, Sr. and Alvania James. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Henry, daughter, Ruby Rebecca and brother, Charlie James, Jr. Ruby was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, and studied early childhood education at Norfolk State University. She started her secretarial duties at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church at age ten under the pastoral of the Rev. Victor Newsome, and served religiously for 58 years. She was a member of the Jubilee Choir, Floral Club, Deaconess Board, Missionaries, founding president of the Junior Choir and Usher Board, founder of the Birthday Club and former Sunday school teacher.
Ruby Rose was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, St. Thomas Chapter No. 51 PHA; Past Senior Matron of Margaret Johnson Tent, United Order of Tents; Past president of Virginia Elks Temple No. 1A; Norfolk Community Hospital Women's Auxiliary; NAACP; Old Dominion Baptist Missionary Association; Voter registrar and poll worker for 35 years, Berkley Multi Service Center Advisory Board.
She leaves her memories to be cherished by her loving family, sons, James V. Cooper, Alvin B. Cooper, John F. Cooper and Kenneth Cooper Alexander (grandson), all of Norfolk, Elihu Charles Cooper of Springfield, VA and Larry C. Cooper of Los Angeles, CA; daughters, Shirley Maxine Whitley of Chesapeake, Mary E. Cooper and Alvania Michelle Cooper of Norfolk; grandchildren, Roland E. Whitley, Jr. of Blacksburg, VA, Antonio L. Whitley and De Shawn Whitley both of Chesapeake, Devon A. Cooper of Norfolk, Jerell E. Cooper of Virginia Beach, VA, Kendra R. Cooper of Norfolk, Vashti T. Cooper of Springfield, VA, Joshua A. Cooper of Los Angeles, CA, and Morgan J. Cooper of Norfolk; son-in-law, Roland E. Whitley, Sr. of Chesapeake; daughter-in-law, Delores T. Cooper of Springfield, VA.; granddaughter-in-law, Donna B. Alexander of Norfolk, Va.; a cousin, Gladys Collins of Norfolk, VA; goddaughters, Rita Whitaker and Shelia Cowell both of Norfolk, Va.; and a host of other devoted relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be Tuesday, February 14th at noon at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. I. Joseph Williams, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday, February 13th 6-8 pm at the church. Family and friends will assemble at the church one hour prior to the service. Metropolitan Funeral Service is in charge.
