VIRGINIA BANKER DEAD AT AGE 70

C. Coleman McGehee, 70, former chairman of Sovran Bank, has died while on vacation in Barbados, West Indies, with his wife, Caroline.

The Richmond resident was a World War II veteran and landed on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy. He earned a Bronze Star, four battle stars and a combat infantry badge.

He earned a bachelor's degree in commerce at the University of Virginia in 1948. He then was hired by First & Merchants National Bank.

He rose to become president of First & Merchants. When that bank merged with Virginia National Bank in 1983, McGehee became president and chief operating officer of Sovran Financial Corp. and Sovran Bank. In 1986, he was named chairman of Sovran Bank, which later was acquired by NationsBank. He retired in 1989.

In addition to his wife, McGehee is survived by two sons, Stephen Y. McGehee of Atlanta and Carden C. McGehee of Bethesda, Md.; and one daughter, Margaret F.V. McGehee of Richmond. by CNB
