The City Council approved Seatack residents' long-held dream of winter swimming and full-court basketball by agreeing Tuesday to build an expanded recreation center with an enclosed pool.
By an 8-2 vote, with one member absent, the council agreed to expand the recreation center beyond the original plans and buy about 11 acres adjacent to the center, at 141 S. Birdneck Road.
The council agreed to expand the center last year, but engineering and architectural studies showed that the $1.98 million appropriation would only allow for an outdoor pool. Backers of the plan turned back to the council and appealed for a more costly indoor facility. The new price tag is $2.3 million.
Tuesday's vote means the project will be placed on the city's capital improvement project list, which will be considered in May.
Plans are expected to be completed by January next year with sealed bids shortly afterward. Construction should begin in April 1996 with completion expected in April 1997. by CNB
