FREE INSPECTION OF CHILD SAFETY SEATS AVAILABLE ON SATURDAY

Child safety seats will be checked by specialists from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at several locations in South Hampton Roads and one place on the Eastern Shore.

A survey of safety seats in Virginia last year found that nine of 10 were installed incorrectly, said the Department of Motor Vehicles. And 18 children younger than 4 died in auto crashes last year. Nine were not in safety seats.

Here are locations for the free inspections, being offered by a traffic safety group - Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety - during Child Passenger Safety Week:

Suffolk - Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad, Market Street.

Norfolk - Fire Station No. 4, Poplar Hall Drive.

Virginia Beach - All Virginia Beach fire stations.

Eastern Shore - Painter Volunteer Fire Department.

Chesapeake - Greenbrier Fire Station No. 14, Volvo Parkway and Eden Way.

Portsmouth - Fire Station No. 7, Winchester Drive and Airline Boulevard.

Franklin - Franklin Fire and Rescue.

Smithfield - Isle of Wight Rescue Squad, South Church Street.

Throughout February, Concerned Citizens is offering $5 for used child-safety seats.

The group cautions parents against buying used seats at garage sales and thrift stores because they may be unsafe.

Old seats may be dropped off at locations of Hall Auto World, AAA of Tidewater, and the DMV. by CNB
