The Albemarle-area's legislative delegation has given nearly unanimous support to a proposal that would require a study on reorganizing the state Department of Public Instruction.
Different Senate and House versions of the bill were endorsed by all but one member of the region's legislative delegation. Rep. Howard J. Hunter Jr., D-Northampton, cast the dissenting vote.
Reps. William T. Culpepper III, D-Chowan, Zeno L. Edwards, R-Beaufort, L.W. Locke, D-Halifax, and W.C. ``Bill'' Owens Jr., D-Pasquotank, voted for the measure on its second, roll-call reading.
A Senate version, approved unanimously by the Senate earlier in the session, would require the state Board of Education to recommend a 50 percent cut in the department's staffing later this spring.
If the Senate fails to agree with the House version of the bill, House and Senate leaders will have to appoint a committee to resolve differences between the two measures before it can become law. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by Associated Press
