2 LAW STUDENTS AT REGENT WIN NATIONAL CONTEST HELD BY ABA

Two third-year law students at Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach have won a national competition sponsored by the American Bar Association.

Peter Pierce - a former Navy officer and pilot - and Stephen Sullivan out-negotiated 15 other law-school teams to win the ABA's student division Negotiation Competition in Miami last weekend. In the regional contests, 120 teams participated.

In all, 120 teams participated in regional contests.

This is the second year in a row that a Regent team has won the regional title, edging out law-school teams from George Washington University, Washington and Lee, the University of Richmond and Villanova, to name a few.

The competition was based on hypothetical contracts on the theme of ``Contracting Across National Borders - International Small Business Ventures.'' The Regent team won nationally for its skills in negotiating contracts with an imaginary American businessman who wanted to build a co-generation electricity plant in Canada.

The other teams making their way to the final round were from Creighton University, Texas Tech and Washburn. ABA members judged the contest.

Regent's victory closely followed an announcement that the ABA had delayed for a year a decision on whether to fully accredit the law school.

``It goes a long way toward showing we're getting a good education,'' Sullivan said Wednesday. ``I would think that would be the primary concern of an accrediting committee.''

Laurene P. Mylar, Regent's assistant dean of admissions, said of the local team's success: ``I think it would be hard for anyone not to take note of that.'' by CNB
