Seaman Gerald Randolph waits for his cue to lower the flag Wednesday
on the long career of the guided-missile cruiser Belknap, a ship
that saw duty from Vietnam through the end of the Cold War.
Commissioned Nov. 7, 1964, the ship was chosen in 1985 to become the
6th Fleet flagship in the Mediterranean, a duty it performed until
its return to Norfolk Dec. 2. The Belknap is scheduled to be
mothballed in the Navy's Reserve Fleet in Philadelphia.
