CAPE HENRY DEFEATS NORFOLK COLLEGIATE

Cape Henry Collegiate showed why it was deserving of the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools' top seed for the 30th annual tournament at Catholic High with a decisive 62-47 opening-round victory over Norfolk Collegiate.

With the final standings a four-way tie for first, a head-to-head tiebreaker was used and the Dolphins came out on top.

But at halftime, even the Cape Henry faithful had their doubts about whether the Dolphins (10-14) were worthy, as their team was down, 27-23.

But in the opening minutes of the third period, Kinte Smith and Chris DiNunzio put all questions to rest - leading a 12-2 charge to put their team up for good.

``We were playing a triangle and two defense with the triangle designed to stop DiNunzio and another player on Smith,'' Oaks coach Larry Swearingen said. ``Unfortunately, a couple of their guys stepped up and hit a couple of shots, they started to gain confidence and Smith simply took over.''

The Oaks (5-24) had a team goal of holding Smith to under 20 points. But he had eight in the third quarter, 12 in the fourth and finished with an evening-high 34 points.

``We weren't moving without the ball in the first half and coach said we weren't screening anybody,'' Smith said. ``So we did the in-and-out thing with me and Chris and when we do that well, it's hard to stop us.''

Norfolk Collegiate was led by Trey Cooper's 17. David Greer and Ryan Welsh each had 10.

The Trojans (16-10) were led by Jai-T Randall's 18 points.
