Horse owners worried about an outbreak of moldy corn poisoning, which has killed an estimated 32 horses this winter, can get their corn feed tested for safety at Virginia Tech.
Thomas Baker, cooperative extension agent in Virginia Beach, says owners can call the Vet College Toxicology Lab or simply send a 1-pound sample of straight corn - not mixed or sweet feed - to Central Laboratory Receiving, VMRCVM, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. 24061-0443.
The test costs $18, and the lab will bill owners, Baker said.
The outbreak, affecting horses in Chesapeake and Suffolk and one in James City County, has caused a flood of phone calls to his office about corn contamination, Baker said. by CNB
