HAMPTON'S TAYLOR TOP COLLEGE COACH

Joe Taylor, who will lead his Hampton University football team into Division I-AA competition for the first time this fall, will have a special reminder of past success to carry with him.

He has been selected as College Coach of the Year in the state for 1994 by the Portsmouth Sports Club.

Taylor will be honored at the club's 49th annual jamboree Wednesday, March 8 at the Holiday Inn-Portside.

Last year Hampton U. registered a 10-1 record and was awarded the SBN Jake Gaither trophy, which recognizes the Historical Black College National Champion.

Hampton was the nation's highest-scoring team with a 46.3 average and was No. 1 defensively against the rush, yielding only 66 yards per game. The Pirates ended the season with a seven-game winning streak and won their last 23 CIAA games.

Taylor has coached Hampton for three seasons. In 11 years as a head coach he has had only one losing team. His career mark is 92-33-4.

Taylor serves on the board of trustees of the American Football Coaches Association and its All-America committee.

Also to be honored at the jamboree are the state college's male athlete of the year, Old Dominion basketball star Petey Sessoms, and the area's high school coach of the year, Churchland basketball coach Mac Carroll.

The featured speaker will be Duke football coach Paul Goldsmith, the Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year.

Tickets to the jamboree are $35 and can be purchased by non-Sports Club members. For information, call Walt Jernigan at 399-6525. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
