The cause of a fire that swept through a furniture warehouse this week will remain undetermined, an Elizabeth City fire marshal said Thursday.
``There's just absolutely no way we can pinpoint it,'' Assistant Fire Chief Jim Howell said after visiting the site at Hughes Boulevard and Chestnut Street.
``Once the roof caved in on the building . . . that pretty much took out every chance we had,'' Howell said.
Where the fire started will remain undetermined as well, although officials said it probably began near a chair that was sitting atop a crated refrigerator in the fully stocked structure.
The fire destroyed the building behind Sawyer's House of Furniture in about half an hour Tuesday. Howell said the blaze will be ruled accidental. No one was injured.
``We're very fortunate no one got hurt,'' Howell said. ``But, yeah, we hate it almost as much as they do. We hate to see anybody lose their property.''
