The University of Virginia is giving the boot to its ``serious Cavalier,'' the school's official athletic logo since 1984.
U.Va. officials say they have hired a New York graphic design company to create a new series of logos to represent the school and its athletic teams.
The Cavalier - that swashbuckling gentleman of yore - will remain U.Va.'s mascot. But the angry-looking version will most likely vanish from T-shirts, mugs, key chains and other items in favor of the new designs, said Steven Heon, licensing director for the university's athletic department.
Heon said the ``serious Cavalier'' - with its Van Dyke beard, plumed hat and determined countenance - simply wasn't popular.
The new logos are to be designed by Sean Michael Edwards Design of New York, which created the purple dinosaur logo for the Toronto Raptors, an NBA expansion team that is to begin play next season.
Heon declined to say how much the new designs would cost.
The first sweatshirts with the new logos are expected to hit stores in late March, he said. by CNB
