GUNFIRE OUTSIDE SUFFOLK STORE LEAVES TWO MEN HURT, IN HOSPITAL

Gunfire erupted about 2:45 p.m. Friday outside a grocery store on East Washington Street, injuring at least two of the people involved.

Police were looking for a third suspect late Friday.

The incident happened on the sidewalk in front of Rose & Williams Grocery Store in the 1500 block of E. Washington.

Bobby Fields, 20, of the 1400 block of Nansemond Parkway, and DeShawn Bailey, 18, of the 5600 block of Gregory Court, Portsmouth, were taken to Obici Hospital, each with two gunshot wounds, police said.

Fields had been shot twice in the right leg, and Bailey was shot in his upper back and a leg, police spokesman Mike Simpkins said.

Both victims were taken to surgery, a hospital spokeswoman said. Fields was listed in fair condition Friday night, Bailey in serious condition, she said.

Seven to 10 shots were fired from at least two types of semiautomatic weapons, Simpkins said. The guns were possibly a 9mm handgun and a .45-caliber handgun, police said, though no weapons had been recovered as of Friday evening.

Police had not determined a motive. According to Simpkins, Fields said Bailey tried to rob him, then shot him, and that Fields then returned fire.
