GROUP TO EXPLORE FORMING AUXILIARY

Commercial fishing families interested in forming a new auxiliary of the N.C. Fisheries Association will meet Feb. 23 at Etheridge Seafood Restaurant.

Discussion will center around forming a new auxiliary chapter for fishing families on Roanoke Island, the northern Outer Banks from the Virginia line to Oregon Inlet, and surrounding areas.

Susan West, president of the fisheries association's Hatteras-Ocracoke Auxiliary, will offer comments and suggestions about the goals and objectives of the auxiliary. Jerry Schill, executive director of the fisheries association, will outline the general history of the organization, the auxiliaries and the challenges that face the commercial fishing industry in coming years.

Currently, there are three auxiliaries to the fisheries association: the Pamlico Auxiliary, formed in February 1992; the Carteret Auxiliary, formed in June 1992; and the Hatteras Auxiliary, formed in July 1992.

The auxiliaries are generally comprised of spouses and families of commercial fishermen who lobby for commercial fishing interests, attend regulatory meetings, schedule informational meetings of interest to fishing families and raise money to promote commercial fishing to support family members who are commercial fishermen and who cannot perform many of these industry-related activities because of time constraints.

The presidents of each auxiliary serve as members of the N.C. Fisheries Association Board of Directors, the policy-making arm of the group.

The organizational meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the restaurant. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. Etheridge's Seafood Restaurant is at milepost 9.5 on the U.S. Route 158 bypass in Kill Devil Hills.
