FLOWER SHOW: SPRING'S MAGIC BLOSSOMS EARLY AT MAYMONT

``THE MAGIC of Gardening,'' theme for the sixth annual Maymont Flower and Garden Show, will be apparent in 20 beautiful spring gardens when the show opens Thursday in Richmond.

Cited by the New York Times as one of the top 12 flower shows in the country, it runs through Sunday at the Richmond Convention Centre.

The show's featured flowers include daffodils, camellias and deutzia. In addition there will be whimsical gazebos and soothing water gardens, plus 150 vendor booths where attendees can buy anything from bulbs to birdseed. A first this year will be a photography exhibition.

The Maymont show is patterned after the Philadelphia Flower Show but is smaller and less crowded.

A new feature this year is a church flower festival at Monumental Church, five blocks from the Richmond Centre. ``A Monumental Festival of Flowers'' features the work of Richmond floral designers and illustrates the ways in which flowers can transform a space. Tickets to that show are an additional $4 but may be purchased only by Maymont Flower Show ticket holders.

Well-known horticulturists speak each day of the show in the adjoining Marriott Hotel. Pete Schultz, director of the Hampton Roads Research Center in Virginia Beach, speaks at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. On Friday, horticulturist and photographer Pam Harper speaks at 12:30 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jim Wilson, co-host of The Victory Garden on PBS, will talk about ``Flowers That Can Take the Heat.'' Other speakers discuss wildflowers, perennial design, trees, water gardening, small gardens, edible flowers and herbs. Lectures begin at 11 a.m. daily, and the last speakers are scheduled at 3:30 p.m.

The Maymont Flower and Garden Show benefits the Maymont Foundation, which operates Maymont, a 100-acre museum and park complex in Richmond.

The Norfolk Botanical Garden Society is sponsoring a trip to the flower show on Friday, leaving the garden at 7 a.m. with early entry into the show. Cost for the all-day trip is $89, but late registrants will have to pay their $6 entry to the show. Call 486-1911. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
