PORTSMOUTH MONOPOLY: Attention Monopoly fans - there is a new game in town. The Game of Portsmouth, sponsored by the Portsmouth Jaycees, will be available in May.
The board game will feature local businesses, landmarks and institutions such as the Portsmouth Museums, Portsmouth General Hospital and Maryview Medical Center in place of the traditional Park Place and Boardwalk. In another twist, the board game has four different variations in rules and includes a chance card that can wipe out a fortune instantly.
Local businesses can buy a block on the board and corresponding deed cards for $200. Individuals and families can have their names listed on the game board's VIP section for $10.
Sonya Carr, Jaycees president, said similar games have been created in other cities including Smithfield and Richmond and have become collectors' items.
The games will sell for $15.
The deadline for buying a block and becoming part of the game is March 1. Prepaid orders for the game also can be made now.
