LITTLE LEAGUE ADMINISTRATOR HONORED CHARLES ``BUTCH'' CUTHRIELL HAS BEEN SELECTED SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR.

CHARLES ``BUTCH'' CUTHRIELL, who has been District 6 Little League administrator since 1982, has been selected as Sportsman of the Year by the Portsmouth Sports Club.

Cuthriell will be honored at the club's 49th annual jamboree Wednesday, March 8, at Holiday Inn-Portside. Duke University football coach Fred Goldsmith will be the featured speaker.

The 52-year-old Cuthriell directs 10 area leagues for boys in baseball and girls in softball. In addition, he is a volunteer worker in the annual 5K Run for Holiday House, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

He served for six years on the city's Parks and Recreation Commission and is a past winner of the Mayor's Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Cuthriell also has assisted in Special Olympic programs and has long been affiliated with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Golf Association, serving as its president in 1991.

A Portsmouth native, he attended Churchland High School and was the starting center on the football team. He graduated in 1961 and attended Old Dominion University and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprentice School.

A planner/estimator with 33 years in the shipyard, Cuthriell coached and served in other official capacities in youth leagues in baseball and football before becoming assistant administrator to Leo Antonucci in District 6 Little League in 1979.

When Antonucci retired and moved to North Carolina, Cuthriell was elected as his successor.

Nearly 4,000 boys and girls participate in District 6 programs.

``Cuthriell has volunteered his time to the children of our community for the past 29 years,'' said Bill Kline, chairman of the Sports Club selection committee for the award. ``His efforts this past year, as well as his civic contributions through all those years, make him well deserving of this special honor. He has helped hundreds of young men and women mature into outstanding citizens through his guidance.''

Cuthriell said he was ``accepting the award in behalf of the league presidents and staff of District 6 and the many dedicated volunteers who have contributed countless hours to make Little League such a success.''

Cuthriell and his wife, Margaret, have two children. Daughter Gail played softball in the Little League program and at Portsmouth Catholic High School. Son Michael, now attending Virginia Tech, played baseball and soccer in the local leagues and soccer and basketball at Portsmouth Catholic and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.

Also to be honored at the jamboree are Churchland basketball coach Mac Carroll, the city's high school coach of the year; Old Dominion University basketball star Petey Sessoms, the male college athlete of the year; and Hampton University football coach Joe Taylor, the college coach of the year.
