LAKESIDE PARK FACELIFT SHOULD BE DONE BY JUNE

Lakeside Park on Bainbridge Boulevard is undergoing a facelift.

``We've been working on it all winter in the hopes of getting it ready for spring,'' said Bob Clifton, coordinator for the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

Last year, the city awarded a contract for $1.6 million to Waterfront Marine Construction Co. of Norfolk to improve drainage at the park. The company is working on a new drainage system under nearby Bainbridge Boulevard, dredging the lake, removing seaweed and debris, replacing bulkheads and rebuilding an arched bridge and a lakeside stage.

John O'Connor, director of Public Works, said he expects the repairs will be completed by June.

It's been 20 years since the city last overhauled Lakeside Park's drainage system. At that time, timber bulkheads were installed.

``Over time, the timber just rots away,'' said O'Connor, ``which is why we're installing steel pilings this time.''

Improvements to the park coincide with a recent donation from Colonial Pipeline Co. In observation of Earth Day 1995, Colonial Pipeline donated $1,000 to the park, which is the site of the city's annual Earth Day Celebration. The donation will be used to improve the park's playground and offset the costs of equipment like benches and trash receptacles.

Clifton said other city parks are scheduled for repairs later this year. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by STEVE EARLEY
