ANOTHER ERA ENDS

ILLUSTRATION: Wrecking crews on Wednesday began knocking down the 50-year-old

Sea Escape hotel and two public restrooms at 17th Street and the

Oceanfront to make room for a park with a band shell and a Dairy

Queen outlet. Businessman Richard Maddox, whose family has owned the

shocking pink inn since 1964, hopes to clear the 250-foot-wide

property this week and to complete construction by late May. Maddox

has promised the city he will set aside space in his Dairy Queen

operation for public restrooms to replace the two bunkerlike

structures that have stood at the 17th Street site since the early

1970s.
