WILLIAM J. SHELDON

William James Sheldon, 76, formerly of Route 1, Hertford, died Sunday morning, Feb. 19, 1995, in Britthaven Nursing Home, Edenton.

A native of Norfolk, he was the son of the late Sidney and Lillian Gwynn Sheldon and the widower of Ernestine Hope Smith Sheldon. He retired from Little Creek Amphibious Base as a crane operator and served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 39, Norfolk and a former member of the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include three sons, William James Sheldon Jr. of Galesburg, Ill., Melvin Lee Sheldon of Norfolk, and Larry Sidney Sheldon of Hertford; a daughter, Helen Florence Hardee of Chesapeake, Va.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Snug Harbor Community Church with Swindell Funeral Home in charge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Research, 358 Mowbray Arch, Norfolk, Va. 23507. The family will meet at the home of L. Sidney Sheldon, Route 1, Box 72 (Riverview Park), Hertford.
