CHURCHLAND GIRLS ADVANCE IN SOUTHEASTERN

Everything was ``Kizzy'' as top-seeded Churchland and No. 4 seed Oscar Smith advanced Monday night to the Southeastern District girls basketball tournament semifinals at Churchland.

Kizzy Dunbar had a season-high 23 points in leading Oscar Smith to a 60-43 opening round win over Western Branch.

Kizzy Butler poured in 22 in the nightcap as Churchland ousted No. 8 seeded Norcom, 73-50.

Western Branch (9-13) had won two of three earlier meetings with Oscar Smith but the Tigers scored first and were never headed en route to their 17-point victory.

Dunbar connected on 6 of 11 field goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 9 of 13 free throws.

``I got my rhythm back,'' said Dunbar. ``I had been a little out of sync but now I'm ready to go again.''

Chavita Matthews chipped in 17 points and some outstanding rebounding for Oscar Smith (15-9).

``That was a key factor,'' said Oscar Smith coach Patty Walsh. ``The last time we played Western Branch they beat us because we got only nine rebounds. Our big people did the job this time.''

Oscar Smith snagged 39 rebounds while Western Branch was shooting a dismal 16 of 58 from the field.

Brandi Woodard and Millette Green both had 15 points for the Bruins.

Norcom (2-17) battled Churchland to a near standstill until the closing minutes of the first half. The Truckers were up, 28-25, with 1:52 before intermission when Nicole Council connected on a 3-pointer to help Churchland to a 35-26 halftime edge.

``We'll have to play better than that against Oscar Smith,'' said Churchland coach Duke Conrad.

Churchland (18-5) and Oscar Smith vie in Wednesday's 7:45 semifinal game.

Butler was 7 of 11 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and 6 of 9 at the foul line. She didn't attempt a shot until 2:46 was left in the first quarter and then hit on four of her first five attempts. She fouled out in the closing minutes.

Teammate Michele Jarman and Council each chipped in 15 points. Felicia Brown paced Norcom's early run when the Greyhounds forged into a lead at 16-15. Brown had all 12 of her points in the opening period.
