GREEN RUN TURNS BACK SALEM, 62-57

Green Run shut down Salem's Corey Irvin and closed down the Sun Devils' season with a 62-57 victory Monday night in the Beach District Tournament quarterfinals at First Colonial.

Green Run, the defending champion, got 25 points from Will Brooks but wasn't assured of advancing until Salem's Sam Skeeter missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left and the Stallions clinging to a 60-57 lead.

Salem (11-8) had beaten Green Run, 57-48, last Friday behind 20 points by Irvin. But Irvin didn't score this time.

``He just wasn't aggressive looking for his shot,'' Salem coach Bill Cochrane said.

Bayside, Cox and Tallwood joined Green Run in the semifinals at Tallwood.

The top-seeded Marlins pulled away from pesky Ocean Lakes in the last 10 minutes to win, 66-44. Cox blitzed Kempsville, 90-67, and Tallwood trounced Kellam, 88-57.

Bayside (19-2) meets Green Run (14-7) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Cox (15-6) and Tallwood (16-5) play Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

Green Run hit Salem with a 15-2 salvo to start the second half and took its biggest lead at 41-34 with just under 10 1/2 minutes to play.

Eddie McInnis, who didn't score in the first half, contributed seven points to the run, including a 3-pointer that put the Stallions in front, 35-34.

Salem recovered to score the last five points of the third quarter, with three of them coming on Richard Holland's buzzer-beater from beyond halfcourt.

The Sun Devils twice took the lead in the fourth quarter, the last time at 53-52, on a putback by Bernard Johnson with 2:18 to play. Green Run rallied to go up, 56-53, when Salem's Anthony Williams hit a 3-pointer to make it 56-56 with 53 seconds remaining.

That's when McInnis struck again. He converted a layup off a long pass from Plaxico Burress to make it 58-56. Johnson hit one free throw for Salem and McInnis was fouled with 11 seconds left.

He hit both shots of the one-and-one to make it 63-60. Salem raced down floor and Skeeter squeezed off an open 3-pointer from the right wing. He missed and Brooks threw down a reverse dunk at the buzzer.

Bayside 66, Ocean Lakes 44: LaShawn Jones led the Marlins with 20 points and Marcus Riddick added 18 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Bayside led, 22-18, at halftime despite shooting only 26 percent and getting outrebounded, 22-20.

The Marlins were more aggressive in the second half, particularly on the boards, where they finished with a 40-35 edge. Bayside shot 54 percent in the second half and scored 11 second-chance points.

The game featured 46 fouls and 63 free throws. Ernest Harrell led Ocean Lakes with 14 and Robert Elam added 11.

Tallwood 88, Kellam 57: The Lions shot 55 percent from the field, outrebounded the Knights, 39-27, and committed only six turnovers. Chris Lawler hit six 3-pointers and led five Tallwood players in double figures with 18 points.

Lawler hit three treys during a 16-4 run to close the first half that stretched a six-point lead to 45-27.

Cox 90, Kempsville 67: The Falcons scored 17 consecutive points early in the second half to blow out the Chiefs.

Cox's press produced a succession of easy baskets.

Carl Lentz led Cox with 23 points. Matt Whalen added 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Whalen has 1,019 career points. The 90 points were the most Cox has scored in three seasons under coach Kenny Edwards. by CNB
