Matthew Hill, of the 3900 block of Shannon Road, died Feb. 19, 1995 in Maryview Hospital.
Mr. Hill was born in Nashville, Tenn. He retired from the U.S. Navy, was a member of Community Presbyterian Church and a former Deacon Board member; former Past Master of Stone Mill Lodge (NU)3, Newport, Rhode Island; former Grand Historian of Masonic Grand Lodge-R.I.; and Major in the Newport, R.I. Militia Newport Artillery Company.
Survivors include his wife, Alfreida McKnight-Hill; a daughter, Mary Jane Lacy of San Diego, Calif.; three sons, James M. Hill of Portsmouth, Alfred W. Hill of Bristol, R.I., and Carlton R. Hill of Virginia Beach; a brother, Ollie Hill of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday at Community Presbyterian Church, Tazewell Street, Portsmouth, by Chaplain Wilbert Douglas. Burial with full military honors will be in Hampton National Cemetery. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. The remains will be ready for viewing at 1 p.m. today. The family will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. Thursday for the processional. The remains will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.
