Mary Briscoe Butler, 90, a former resident of Suffolk, died Feb. 20, 1995, after a long illness.
A native of Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Elbert Easton and Willie Skinner Briscoe and was the widow of Lawrence Bascomb Butler, former chief of police of the City of Suffolk for 25 years. During World War II she worked as a desk clerk and dispatcher at Police Headquarters. From 1922 to 1975 Mrs. Butler taught in various schools in the Suffolk area. At Kings Fork, in Nansemond County, she taught the first grade in the same room for 21 years. In 1970 she retired from public schools, but continued to teach at the Nansemond Suffolk Academy until 1975. While living in Suffolk, Mrs. Butler was a member of the Suffolk Historical Society, the Woman's Club and a life member of the Riverview Garden Club. In 1987 she moved to a retirement community in Williamsburg, where she enjoyed the many historical and cultural activities in that area.
Survivors include one son, Col. (Ret.) Lawrence E. Butler of Hampton; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. David Hampton. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
