IN SUPPORT OF UNIFORMS

I was pleased to read the article entitled ``Middle School Takes a Long Look at Uniforms.'' Somewhere along the way, students have either forgotten or not known the purpose of attending school, which is naturally to receive an education and to make the very best of that education.

The art of fashion, out-dressing and showing off expensive designer brand clothes seems to be prevalent today in our schools. Many of our students of the '90s have parents who are struggling to help make ends meet and some are even unable to make ends meet.

How can these students wear expensive clothes? It is in most cases impossible, except when there is outside help from a relative, a close friend or maybe a good parent. These students are constantly harassed and insulted. Due to this matter, there is a result of dislike, fear, arguments and even violence.

If uniforms could be required, this problem could begin to be resolved. This would be the beginning of a new attitude. As a result of the new attitude, the students will not necessarily focus on how highly fashionable they are but possibly how much they can achieve.

Finally, one's attire plays a major role in one's character. Let's take the cleaning housewife for example. When cleaning, she certainly does not wear her most attractive attire but something comfortable and suitable for cleaning. The painter would not dare spoil his best attire while on the job, but he wears an outfit that suits his purpose. Since a school is not meant for fashionable purposes, fashionable attire should not be prevalent. Let's offer the best for our students. School uniforms could be the answer.
