MERCER E. PHILLIPS

Mercer Eugene ``Jeep'' Phillips, 72, of the 1200 block of Aaron Court, a retired aircraft mechanic, died Feb. 23, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Mr. Phillips was a native of Kinston, N.C., and was the widower of Zelda Gentry Phillips. He was retired from the Norfolk Naval Air Station and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary Frances Thompson, Elizabeth Faye Harmon, Cynthia Jane Heath, Jennifer Marie Williams, all of Portsmouth, and Deborah Lynn Parker of Chesapeake; eight sons, Michael Eugene Phillips, Richard Edward Phillips, Ronald Lee Phillips, all of Chesapeake, James Ralph Phillips, David Ray Phillips, Robert Darrell Phillips, Joseph Emory Phillips, all of Portsmouth, and Douglas Glynn Phillips of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Kathy Mills of Castle Hayne, N.C., and Emily Steele of Concord, N.C.; 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two daughters, Peggy Joyce Burch and Katherine Jean Phillips.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Navy honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at 109 Mayflower Road, Portsmouth. ILLUSTRATION: Personal Photo
