Rescue crews have concluded a 12-hour search without finding a crewman from the Norfolk-based carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, currently in the Mediterranean Sea.
The crewman fell overboard Wednesday night from a catwalk.
Airman Heath Christian Cordeiro, 23, of Longview, Texas, was seen falling overboard about 10 p.m.
A witness sounded the alarm and immediately threw a life ring into the water, officials said. A motor whale boat, with helicopters from the Eisenhower and the guided missile cruiser Anzio, joined the search.
Cordeiro, who was single, has been in the Navy since 1992.
The Eisenhower has been deployed since Oct. 20 and is scheduled to return in mid-April.
