In Thursday's Beach District semifinal, Princess Anne did something no team has been able to do since 1988.
With their 33-30 victory over Salem, the Cavaliers became the first team in seven years to keep a Larry Bowman-coached squad out of the Eastern Region tournament.
The Cavaliers (15-7) took Bowman's place with the victory - advancing to tonight's Beach championship at Tallwood against top-ranked Kempsville (24-0).
No matter what tonight's outcome, Princess Anne moves into the region tournament for the first time since 1981.
The victory also marks a remarkable turnaround for the Cavaliers - who last season were 0-20.
Salem (18-6) shot only 22 percent and went 10 1/2 minutes from the late second through early fourth periods without a basket.
Neither team ever held more than a six-point lead.
Princess Anne held a 26-20 lead after three quarters, but Salem went on a 6-0 run with Misty Colebank tying the game on a layup with 2:55 left.
Salem then actually took the lead with two minutes left when Kelly King took an inside feed from Jenny Harmon. Princess Anne tied it a minute later on Damanica Moody's putback of Suawana Taylor's miss. King drove the lane to give Salem back the lead, only to have Taylor nail the game's only 3-pointer with 48 seconds left.
With 28.7 seconds left, Isha Chaney hit both ends of a one-and-one for the final margin. by CNB
