ON FREDERICK BOULEVARD, SOMEONE IS PELTING CARS

Dozens of cars on one of Frederick Boulevard's most heavily traveled sections have been pelted recently with a variety of objects, including rocks, bricks and cinder blocks.

One motorist reported a bullet hit her car. She was not wounded.

Another was injured by glass from a shattered window, said G.A. Brown of the Portsmouth Police Department.

Police suspect young people have been hiding behind a brick wall at Jeffry Wilson Homes, a housing project, to throw things at cars. Brown said investigators have interviewed two youths, but have made no arrests.

Twenty-six incidents have been reported since Jan. 23 - 16 in the past two weeks, Brown said.

The rash of attacks highlights similar incidents that have occurred for several years between the 1800 and 2000 blocks of Frederick Boulevard close to the Interstate 264 overpass.

The incidents are being investigated as felonies, Brown said.

On Jan. 29, a 28-year-old woman reported that her car was fired on while she drove on Frederick Boulevard near the intersection of Turnpike Road. She told police a bullet entered her car through an open window, lodging in the vehicle's door.

Another woman reported that her windshield was shattered by an unknown object thrown at her 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity on Feb. 1 as she crossed the railroad tracks on Frederick Boulevard.

A third woman reported that her mouth was injured by broken glass when her 1992 Ford van's windshield was shattered by an object as she drove on Frederick Boulevard near Jeffry Wilson on Feb. 2.

Most recently were two incidents on Feb. 18. Both vehicles were damaged in the 2000 block of Frederick when objects crashed into their sides.

Police have a good case against the youthful suspects in at least one of the incidents, Brown said. Charges are expected to be filed soon.
