The school system has a new chief financial officer, 35-year-old Mordecai L. Smith.
The School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to appoint Smith, who has filled the position on an acting basis since August. Smith replaces Hal Canary, who was fired last summer after only one embattled year in the position.
Following Canary's firing, the school system reported a severe budget shortfall.
Smith had served as acting financial chief for two months in 1993, before Canary was hired.
Except for his stints as acting chief, Smith has served as director of budget development since 1989. Before that, he spent five years as a senior budget and management analyst for the city.
Smith received his bachelor's in accounting from Norfolk State University in 1981. He earned a master's in business administration from Old Dominion University in 1988. He is working on his doctorate in public policy at Regent University. ILLUSTRATION: Mordecai Smith
