NEW GALLERY: A 3,500-square-foot art gallery will open this weekend at Tower Mall in the space formerly occupied by Waldenbooks.
Potrafka's Gallery will represent about 30 artists, including painters, potters and sculptors, Wayne Potrafka said.
A potter and teacher, Potrafka said he also will move his studio to the mall. He formerly operated galleries in Pembroke, Va., and Marshall, Mich.
The gallery will be open 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday; 12:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday.
JUGGLING SPACES: Fields of Dreams, the eclectic gift shop operated by Audrey Cooke and Barbara Vincent, will move from its Prison Square location to 461 Dinwiddie St.
Fields of Dreams will become a working studio and show room, specializing in the tiles and other items created in house.
Olde Towne Folk Art will take over the Fields of Dreams space at 432 High St. The shop will feature items made by local artists, said Jean Piedmont, a textile crafter.
The shop will be open 10 a.m.5 p.m. six days a week. ``I plan to be open on Sunday and I have not decided which day I will close,'' she said.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: The board of directors of the Portsmouth Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce approved the following new and ex-officio members:
L. Ron Meeks, plant manager with Hoechst Celanese; Mary L. Curran, assistant vice president with Central Fidelity Bank (representing the Midtown Association); and Keith Toler, director of the Portsmouth Convention and Visitors Bureau.
TIDEWATCHERS: Ann Cabanallis of Cradock has been installed as recording secretary of the 1995 board of directors of Tidewatchers, the booster club of the Norfolk Tides baseball team.
IFPTE OFFICERS: Members of The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), Local 1 in Portsmouth, has elected new officers.
The IFPTE Local 1 union serves professional engineers, scientists and technicians in a variety of professions at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, PERA and SUPSHIPs Newport News.
The following were elected to two-year terms:
Woodard E. Copeland, president; Paul D. Long, executive vice president; Drew S. Terry, vice president NNSY; Tom Oburn, vice president PERA; Dennis Smyers, vice president SUPSHIP Newport News; Al Pendleton, secretary; Fred Bright, treasurer; Harry Hartman, guide; Guy Shelton, sergeant-at-arms; Wes Blinn, trustee; Don Everett, trustee; Chico Navarro, trustee; and Gary Whitford, appointed chief steward for NNSY.
PRHA AWARD: The Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority has recently received notification from the Department of Housing and Urban Development that it was awarded the highest ranking possible in regard to its performance in managing and maintaining the city's public housing communities. A grade of 100 was achieved during fiscal year 1994.
Eleven factors are used to rate the quality of a housing authority in performance of its mission to provide safe, sanitary and affordable housing. Any score above 90 entitles the housing authority to be recognized as a ``High Performer.''
