LISA RICE OF NSU HONORED

Norfolk State's Lisa Rice has been chosen as the outstanding female college athlete in the state by the Portsmouth Sports Club.

Rice will be among those honored at the 49th annual Portsmouth Sports Club Jamboree Wednesday, March 8. Duke football coach Fred Goldsmith will be the featured speaker.

Rice, a 5-3 senior guard on Norfolk State's womens basketball team, broke the NCAA record for career assists by a Division II player this year. She shattered the mark of 927 by Albany State's Selina Bynum during Norfolk State's 22-4 regular season.

She was CIAA Player of the Year in the 1993-94 season.

A native of Gloucester, Rice was a two-time All-State performer in high school. An All-CIAA selection since her freshman year, she also is a double-figure average scorer.

``She probably is the hardest working player I have ever had the pleasure of being associated with,'' said Norfolk State coach James Sweat.

Also to be honored at the jamboree are the city's Sportsman of the Year, District 6 Little League administrator Charles ``Butch'' Cuthriell; Old Dominion basketball player Petey Sessoms, the male college athlete of the year; Hampton University football coach Joe Taylor, the college coach of the year; and Churchland basketball coach Mac Carroll, the area high school coach of the year.

Tickets are still available at $35. For information, call Walt Jernigan at 399-6525. by CNB
