JAMES HAROLD NEWELL

Captain James Harold Newell, USN, Ret., 83, of Norfolk, a retired United States Navy Captain and Naval Aviator, died February 24, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.

Captain Newell, was a World War II and Korea Navy Veteran and was a War hero during World War II for bravery in action flying a Douglas Dauntless Dive Bomber off the USS Lexington. He was awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired in 1964.

Captain Newell was a native of Camp Hill, Ala., and a resident of Norfolk for 40 years.

Captain Newell was a 1934 Graduate of United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and attended Auburn University and Georgia Tech.; Member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Bam Newell of Norfolk, and a daughter, Mary Newell and grandson Paul Spitz of Scarsdale, N.Y.; 3 brothers, Robert O. Newell of Greer, S.C., William C. Newell of Palos Verdes, Calif., Charles P. Newell of Birmingham, Ala.; and 7 nieces and nephews including RADM Bruce Newell, USN, RET. of Sewickley, Pa., and Capt. John W. Newell, USN, Ret. of Springfield, Va.

A Chapel service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Navy Relief. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
