DIABETES RESEARCH IN HAMPTON ROADS

The article regarding a family's battle with diabetes was poignant and heartwarming (Daily Break, Feb. 20).

A fact that should have been included is that right here in Hampton Roads at the Diabetes Institute, a program of Eastern Virginia Medical School, we have one of the world's outstanding research and clinical centers.

EVMS is searching for the cure to diabetes and has been conducting research on a daily basis for the past six years. There are at least four fully equipped world-class laboratories functioning with a staff of more than 35 scientists making headway every day. Several outstanding discoveries have already been made, and the cure for diabetes could very likely be found right here in Hampton Roads.

All of this has come about because a number of Hampton Roads citizens, as well as many individuals from distant parts of the country, have contributed more than $8.7 million to establish and fund continuing work toward finding the eventual cure.

This work brings to mind a quote from the past: ``Some experience difficulty and ask why; others see the same situations seeking solutions and ask why not?''

The cure and improved treatment can be found, and why not right here?

Those interested in seeing what's being done right here with regard to finding the cure for diabetes should visit the Diabetes Institutes on Brambleton Avenue, south campus of EVMS.
